About Therapy

If you have arrived here then it’s likely that someone you know is going through a tough time. A friend, a family member, a loved one, perhaps even a patient of yours or a work colleague. Or that person may be you yourself.

We are all human. No-one is immune to the obstacles that present themselves to us as we make our way along life’s highways and byways. Every now and then though, we meet with something along the way that really throws us or that overwhelms our capacity to muddle through.

That’s when we look for help. It’s a good reflex and one which is fundamental to our humanity. We reach out to the other from the very beginning of our lives. In the best of circumstances someone reaches back to us. That’s where we come in.

Prospect Psychotherapy Practice

Formerly Dubh Linn Centre is dedicated to providing the headspace for you, or your loved ones or for those to whom you feel a duty of care, to work things out.

We are a group of fully-trained and accredited psychotherapists, experienced at providing a means for people to address their difficulties. It could be just a rough patch that they are trying to get through. Or it could be something of an ongoing nature.

We’ve been doing just that for a very long time. Our training has been a long one, undertaken over very many years. Our preparation for the work has required us to go through the very same process that we are making available to you. So we know what that’s like. It can be a little scary to open up about oneself and the intimacy of one’s life to someone else. Everyone has his ‘secret garden’. However, almost everyone finds that even just unburdening the self in the safe environment of therapy brings some immediate relief. Then the real work of freeing oneself up to tackle the issues at hand can begin.

So what can you expect? Our way of working used to be spoken about as the ‘Talking Cure’. These days it’s more likely to be called ‘Talking Therapy’ or ‘Psychotherapy’ or ‘Counselling’. It’s what’s generally being recommended when one hears ‘maybe you should talk to someone about that’. It’s been around for a long time. More than a century. These days the advances in research into mental health have given conclusive results in relation to the usefulness of therapy.

We don’t offer therapy sessions via skype-calls, video-calls or over the phone. Call us old-fashioned, but we believe there’s a lot to be gained from people really being present in a shared space. The virtual doesn’t do it for us.

You’ll find our premises to be a welcoming, safe and comfortable place. The area is really well-served by public transport and there is plenty of pay-parking in the immediate vicinity. There’s also a bike-rack right outside if you prefer to arrive under your own steam.

Who is it for?

Anyone experiencing life difficulties, including children, adolescents, adults – individual and couples. Work, love, life issues.

Who are we? We are a group of fully-trained and accredited psychotherapists, experienced at providing the means for people to address their difficulties. What issues does the work address? Psychological suffering generally along the whole life-span. The founder of psychotherapy hit the nail on the head when he said that all human problems are about work and love. We suffer from the demands of the society and our own expectations and these translate into a whole range of issues.

Life and work stresses, anxiety, depression, post-natal depression, issues related to parenthood, conflict and anger, obsessional behaviors and thoughts, fear and phobia, addictions, sexual problems, sexuality and gender identity issues, difficulties in work or love relationships, bereavement and loss, separation, divorce, social difficulties and anxieties, and issues relating to self-esteem.

What therapy approach is taken? The one deemed appropriate to the presenting difficulties.

Does it work? The general consensus these days is that talking therapy works. There’s a whole stack of research to support that view. There is a growing body of outcome research on long-term psychotherapies, and a body of evidence has emerged supporting both short- and long-term psychotherapy as effective in the treatment of both mild and complex problems. It takes time and commitment so you have to give it that. We do.
